What is a Giclée Print?

A Giclée, pronounced (zhee-clay) from the French meaning to “spray”, is a highly sophisticated printing method that represents a milestone in image reproduction and archival longevity for fine art prints. They are made using a combination of pigmented inks and archival fine art media such as canvas and heavyweight fine art papers. The printer literally blends the colored pigments as it prints, to produce a print of superior quality and stunning color and detail. A Giclee is a collectible-quality art object in itself, and rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes and is commonly found in museums and galleries around the world. This technology is absolutely integral to the fine art printing of digital originals, as it transforms light and pixels into pigment and texture.

How long will a Giclée last?

Giclee prints are currently the most archival fine art reproductions on the market today. As with any valuable artwork they should be displayed out of direct sunlight to ensure longevity, however, we use only media and where applicable, matting that is guaranteed archival: pigmented inks and fine art paper specifically designed for giclee printing. We also take measures to ensure the longevity of all our prints by fixing first with a sealer to protect from moisture and scuffing, then a second application of UV protectant to shield from harmful UV rays, which can cause fading. Framing paper images behind glass is always recommended to ensure the highest degree of archival longevity. Our canvas prints, however, are not designed to be displayed behind glass so they are treated with generous amounts of protective coatings, and will perform as well as any original acrylic or oil painting would.Save

Who does our printing?

All printing is done in by professional labs using with the finest professional equipment currently available, in accordance to our own exacting standards of print quality and color reproduction. No print leaves the studio without the approval of the artist.

What are Digital Originals?

A Digital original, as the name implies, is an image that was created and conceived digitally, that is from the manipulation of light and pixels within computer imaging software. A digital original may include input images files from any one of the following: a digital photograph or scan of a painting or drawing, a digital paint program, or image editing software. The amazing thing about digital originals is that they ARE original works of art, they have no real world counterpart. All digital originals are issued in series of either unsigned Open Editions or hand signed and numbered Limited Editions (see What are Open Editions & Limited Editions in this FAQ).

What are Limited Editions Prints?

A limited edition print is so named because of its run- the number of  prints that are created and sold,  is limited to a specific number, usually, 150. Each run is determined by size and any other qualifying factors; for example, you can have a limited edition run of an image in a 11 x 14 size on paper, another run of 16 x 20 on paper, a third run of 11 x 14 on canvas, and so on. If you purchase the 5th print sold in the 11 x 14 on paper run, then somewhere on the print will be written 25/150, which indicates that your print is the 25th piece out of a total of 150 to be created in this particular run.
